Two-hour time limit: The clock begins right before the first pitch. No inning can start after the two-hour mark.

Showdown tiebreaker: If a game is tied after two hours, it goes to a showdown, a face-off between a pitcher and a hitter. The defensive team has only a pitcher, catcher, and fielder (positioned on the infield). If the batter is retired, the next team gets to hit. You get just one out. If the ball is put in play, the fielder must retrieve it (sometimes going to the outfield wall) and prevent the batter from rounding the bases and scoring a point. The showdown continues with both teams batting until one team outscores the other.

Every inning counts: Teams get a point for scoring the most runs in an inning. Win the inning, get the point. If the teams are scoreless or score the same amount, that inning is even and you go to the next one. The last inning counts the most—every run counts as a point.

No stepping out: If a batter steps out of the box, it’s a strike.

No bunting: If a batter bunts, he will be ejected.

Batters can steal first: If there’s a wild pitch or passed ball at any time, the batter can take off for first base.

No walks: On ball four, we call that a “sprint.” The batter can hustle for first base—and beyond—while the catcher quickly throws the ball to a teammate. Each of the nine defensive players must touch the ball before the batter can be tagged out or held on base. Fast players can wind up on third (or maybe get an inside-the-park homer if the defense can’t pull it off). It’s considered an exceptional defensive effort if the throws are expeditious enough to get the runner at second.

No mound visits: Coaches, the catcher, and the other fielders are prohibited from visiting the pitcher, so there are zero needless delays. The game keeps moving. If necessary, teammates and coaches can hype up their pitcher from afar.
